Long ago dragons ruled the land and sky, a highly skilled and dangerous predator they were at the top of the food chain and something to be feared by all below them. This included the humans that had come to inhabit the same land. A majority of the people lived in fear of being killed and eaten by the great beasts, having little warning before they would strike and burn the town down killing many, and devouring the livestock. This went on for decades as the humans spread across the land and, despite the hardships and dangers posed by the fire breathing beasts, built up the beginnings of a kingdom with its first great city at its heart. One year after what seemed like a most brutal and savage attack that completely decimated a large town near the kingdom's capital the first ruler had enough and sent out a call across the kingdom ordering the best fighters of each settlement to report to the capital to gather a force to send out against the winged beasts. That is all the dragons were to the humans, winged beasts that did nothing but destroy and slaughter. In turn the humans came to the decision that in order to protect themselves and be safe once and for all they needed to eradicate the dreaded creatures. Under the orders of King Charles they did just that over the following years. After a while they became nothing more than stories mothers told their children to scare them. Legends told in taverns from the fighters who rode to eradicate them. Life went on, in a much easier manor. The kingdom grew, the people thrived. Humans were now on the top of the food chain- excluding the occasional bear or mountain lion. As centuries passed some even began to doubt dragons even existed at all. If only they knew how wrong they were.
A deafening roar could be heard for miles around echoing off the mountains around a village that was nestled safely in valley between two ridges of great snow capped peaks. All who were out working the fields and going about their daily lives heard thunderous noise, some chose to ignore it and continue about their day but a few couldn't help but look up and search the surrounding peaks for any sign of what could have possibly produced such a noise. Resting on the top of a lone snow topped peak was the great silhouette of a beast of legend. A great black dragon. Some thought it was a just trick of the light, others guessed it was the way the snow had fallen. As it dove off the peak straight towards the village it became clear what it was to those few. The large beast flew in a wide circle above the small village, letting out another deafening roar before it flew off out of sight. Dragons had returned. Or rather, they had never left. They had only went into hiding. That was possibly it, though the humans could never be sure. Or could they?
A boy of only twelve decided to follow the dragon as best he could, it was after all a dragon. Something from stories meant to scare but only interested him. He had always wanted to slay a dragon. The boy traveled for what felt like hours, though was only around thirty minutes on horseback when he found the dragon. It was then that he realized he had not brought any sort of blade, at that moment he thought the best idea was to turn back before it noticed him but a voice stopped him. "It wont hurt you." the human voice said, gently. The boy froze and looked back at the dragon who had turned to look at him, a pale haired woman standing right next to its head petting it. "It wont hurt you." she repeated calmly, giving a glance to the massive dragon. The boy got off of his horse, and ran a hand across the stallions face to calm the creature. The boy was glad he was not the only one afraid of the winged beast. "How can you be so sure?" he asked the light haired girl, his eyes still on the dragon. The dragon huffed before giving the girl a pointed look, the pale haired girl quickly mounted the dragon and looked over at the boy giving him a small smile she simply said, "He's my friend." before the dragon shoved off the ground and took to the skies sending a wave of air as it did. The boy shielded his eyes from the dust before looking up at the sky as it flew off. Moments later the sounds of many men could be heard then the boy could see them. The kings men, probably out to kill the dragon.
It has been a year since the great black dragon has been spotted along with the pale haired girl. Rumors of smaller dragons and dragon riders are spreading faster than a wildfire. The only thing that is truly known is that there have been many reports that much smaller dragons being seen throughout the land, mostly accompanied by humans. The king is anxious, he thinks they are both a threat to the kingdom. He has set out a declaration that any dragons should be killed on site along with possible dragon riders. He knows innocents may be killed because of it but he can not risk the threat of dragons destroying his kingdom.
